Robert van Kan has over twenty years of hands-on working experience in managing higher education and academic cooperation with China, in government, semi-government and private sector functions. Robert worked at the Royal Netherlands Embassy in Beijing for ten years (1991-2001), where he was responsible for academic cooperation, cultural exchange and media relations. He served as the first director of the Dutch government-funded   Netherlands  Education   Support   Office  (Neso)  in  China ( 2001-2006 ),  which  is responsible for Dutch higher education marketing in China. During his tenure, the Chinese student population in the Netherlands increased from 1.000 to 8.000 and the Netherlands became a top-10 study destination for Chinese students. In June 2006 he moved back to the Netherlands to become head of international marketing at Nuffic headquarters. In June 2008, Robert joined Dutch education consultancy iE&D Solutions BV, for which he set up subsidiary companies in Hong Kong and Beijing.  Robert left iE&D Solutions in January 2012 and took over its Chinese subsidiaries, which have since operated under the new name Edvance Education International. Robert has presented at EAIE and ACA conferences, and conducted numerous workshops for universities and national education agencies in China and various European countries.

Robert studied Sinology at Leiden University and Beijing Normal University as well as modern history at Radboud University Nijmegen. He is fluent in Chinese.
